Redneck Christmas?

You be the judge.

Is Christmas over all ready?  I don't think I can take any more abuse and disappointment in one holiday season.  Let me ask the normal people this:  If your family Christmas get together ends with yelling, screaming, crying and hurt feelings all in the front yard of the home the "celebration" is taking place at, and all the while being witnessed by neighbors, is that necessarily a bad thing?  Luckily, all the heavily armed family members were glued to the tv.  A long three hour drive home.

Let me ask you this.  If you're getting ready fo the other half of the family Christmas get together three hours in the other direction, and you have a 70 degree day, followed by a thunderstorm that night with 80 mph winds, a deluge of heavy rain, downed  power lines, flash flooding and tornados, followed by freezing rain and snow, does it count as a white Christmas?  Then travel through it all to discover that your mother and sister voted for Obama.  I haven't been so surprised since I found out kissing didn't cause pregnancy.  I guess that throws the season of joy right out the window.

Finally, is it a bad thing to wear a mistletoe belt buckle to a family gathering?  Can't wait until next year!!!

The Exciting Conclusion...

After waiting a week for approval from his physical therapist we finally heard the news.  Lewis cannot have a motorized wheel chair.  I remember back in the eighties at KKRD in Wichita, we did a fundraiser at a Grandy's restaurant for a girl that had been in a car accident and left paralyzed.  They did not want her to have a motorized wheelchair so she would get excercise using her arms.  I would guess it is the same for Lewis.

Luckily, the man, George S. , who donated the motorized wheelchair also gave us a new manual chair which we presented to Lewis on Friday.  I would say that Lewis was speechless.  He didn't have much to say but I think he was grateful, but confused.  I haven't seen him since but I'm sure I will cross paths with him sometime this week.

Now, my mission is to find someone who needs this motorized chair.  I have talked to someone whose daughter is a paraplegic from a car accident and needs a chair.  I will let you know if this chair will suit her.  I would also like to thank Jim O. (I use initials to protect their privacy) for offering his help to help me help others.  I appreciate it.

On a sad note, I found out this morning that a friend of mine in radio has passed away.  His name was Steve Brown and anybody who has ever listened to Top Forty radio has a connection to this man.  This was the person who brought 24 hour a day Top Forty to the radio dial, making The Mighty 1290 KOIL the first fulltime Top Forty radio station in America.  I had the good fortune to work with him at KOIL in Omaha in 1979 and 1980, before moving to Wichita.

Steve Brown was 68 years young and a radio legend.  I will miss him.

I'm so Excited....

The most amazing thing happened over the weekend.  But first, let me give you a little background.

As you may know,  as a radio guy I'm a pretty good medication delivery person.  I deliver mostly to nursing homes and have gotten to know a couple of the patients.  One such fella is Louis at a nursing home in Raytown.  Louis is a unique individual.  Louis is in his mid sixties and a double amputee.  He says he lost his legs when he was in the Army.

One day as I was leaving the facility and Louis asked me, "Hey, how do I get a job like yours?"  I kind of chuckled to myself for fairly obvious reasons but I told hm he needed to call the company and talk to them.  I also told him he needed a car.  He said, "I got a car....I ain't got no G*D D*MN legs!!!  Hahahahahahahahah."  The joke was on me.  He then asked if they'd hire someone with a felony.  I asked him what it was he did to have a felony and he said "I shot a guy."  I asked, "Why did you do that?"  He responded "He shot me first."  I asked, "Why do you have a felony if he shot you first?"  Louis said, "Because I was in his neighborhood."  You know, he got homered by the witnesses.

We talk about the Chiefs and a lot of things.  He was having trouble getting out the door one day and told me his wheelchair was worn out.  That was all I needed to hear.  I spent a week or two trying to find him a new wheelchair.  I thought, why not try for a motorized one?  I never got a response until last Friday.  A guy named George called and said he had one he had tried to sell and no one wants to buy them right now so he said he would donate it to Louis.  We drove to Lee's Summit and picked it up Saturday.   I plan on giving it to Louis sometime this week, as soon as the home administrator gives me the ok.

I can't tell you how excited I am about this.  This man has no family in the area, no legs and a broken wheelchair.  I believe it's time for something good to happen to him.  The nurse I talked to today asked me why I was doing this for someone I don't really even know.  I told her I saw a need and I want to fill it.  She said the Lord will bless me for this and I told her that is what I was hoping for.

I'll let you know how this turns out.
